There was an original inked description found inside the box which read "Made for a member of the Tokugawa Shogunate for whom this crest was reserved." In researching this further, I found and printed out the information regarding the crest which was from Japan's Tokugawa period which lasted from 1603 to 1867 (printout included). When I bought it, I was told it was sterling silver although there are no marks indicating such (probably due to its age). I purchased this amazing little box from a local auction several years ago.
